Is the relatively new and still evolving open-source editor for web design and development built with web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The project was created and is maintained by, and is released under an, which is thought-provoking since Adobe has a lot of equity already invested in other text and code editing tools such as Dreamweaver. The driving force of Brackets is that it is for the web and by the web, meaning that as a software application, it is built using the same technologies that build the web. Their catch phrase, 'If you can code in Brackets, you can code on Brackets.'
Brackets is a fully open-source and community project where developers contribute to the build, and if you are interested in influencing the direction of the project, any interested developers are welcome to join to get on the build list. Since Brackets is still young, I would not recommend it for your routine coding tasks; however, if you like cutting edge applications you might enjoy examining some of the clever and creative features. Test drive Brackets The initial versions became available in May 2012; the current milestone downloads are available on, and as of this writing, Brackets Sprint 17 in both MAC.dmg (23.9MB) and Windows.msi (21.6MB) versions are dated November 30, 2012, available as zip or tar.gz compressed files. In all, there are sixteen downloads of eleven versions with 24 branches and nineteen tags. The current build is still in its infancy and not deemed a full-featured code editor just yet; it is considered a beta release and ready for early adopters to start playing around with the tool at their own risk. I gave Brackets a test drive myself as displayed in Figure B: The top level menu bar offers the typical options including File, Edit, View, Navigate, Debug, and Help.
From the File menu item you can create a New File or a New Folder, as well as Open File and Folder —nothing really new here. By default, Brackets opens up to its own source code, where you can see the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript backbone of the application. The Debug menu provides a nifty Show Developer Tools (F12) which opens in your default browser (Chrome in my case) and allows you to view the Elements Computed Style, Styles, Metrics, Properties, and Event Listeners for the open file as shown in Figure C: To create a new file, simply go to File, New File (Ctrl+N) and type in the file name. In this demonstration, I am naming the file index.html, and then the plain file is created and the cursor starts at line 1, as shown in Figure D and E below.

Using Excel to make a bracket offers you the ability to customize your tournament tracking. Single and Double Elimination Most tournaments use a single elimination format. With this arrangement, a single loss eliminates a team from championship contention. Double elimination tournaments, as the name suggests, adds a second chance. Creating a double elimination bracket in Excel is also possible. Some tournaments also feature a round-robin portion, where teams play against each other to determine bracket ranking in a subsequent elimination round.
Other times, national rankings establish where teams place in the tournament structure. Use a Basketball Bracket Template Perhaps the quickest way to get started with any single elimination tournament is to use an Excel template that's already designed and customized in the correct tree diagram format. Microsoft Office offers a tournament bracket template in single elimination format with capacity for 64 teams and six tiers of competition.

Make a Bracket From Scratch in Excel Even if you plan to make your own elimination bracket form, examining the Microsoft template may help you with layout ideas. The number of teams participating and the format of your tournament dictate the form your own bracket will take. Single elimination tournaments are the simplest form.
For a small number of teams coming from a single league or division, a horizontal pyramid layout is most common. Every round cuts the number of progressing teams in half, so you can easily determine the number of rounds, which translates to the number of rows in an Excel spreadsheet. For example, eight teams create three rounds: all eight teams, four winners then two winners to determine the champion, so you'll need four rows. Lay Out the First Round Enter bracket spots or team names in Column A. The row number in which you start depends on what information you want above your tree diagram. You can enter this in cells on the spreadsheet or on the page header.

The most compact bracket form has a blank cell in the column between each bracket spot. You may spread these out for visual reasons, but always keep an odd number of blank cells so that the advancing team can be listed evenly between the team names. For example, an eight-team tournament starting at cell A1 has bracket spots entered at A1, A3, A5, A7, A9, A11, A13 and A15. Use cell outlines, fill colors or some other place holder in these cells, if you don't yet have team names. Add the Second Round Enter the first-round winner spot in column B. For each pair of teams in the first round, there will be a second round spot created. This will be the cell in column B halfway between the team names in column A.
For the example above, second round teams are listed in cells B2, B6, B10 and B14. Create the Third Round and Champion Spots Use column C for the third round, using the same concept. The example lists the finalists in cells C4 and C12. The tournament winner appears in cell C8. Tip.
You can use the formatting and design features in Excel for Office 365 to add visual appeal to your bracket, including color, lines and graphics. Excel's SmartArt graphics can also add visual appeal. Other Tournament Bracket Formats Single elimination tournaments with two divisions are often laid out as facing horizontal pyramids. Each tournament has its own tree chart as described above, facing each other with the fourth-level cells creating the championship game. For more complex tournament formats, finding a free bracket generator or double elimination bracket generator may save time, so search online for these as well as for Excel templates matching your tournament format, if creating a bracket from scratch consumes too much time.
