No idea whats going on but i replaced it with another card reader and all is fine. One thing you may notice, if you are using an Intel MoBo with on board USB3, is that transfer speeds will be lower than expected under W8.

Apparently Intel haven't released any USB 3.0 extensible Host Controller Driver's for W8 yet, so although USB3 works its not up to speed on certain MoBos. Bit of a pain really.
